Nintendo Wii Baptism

nintendo wii baptismIt’s been almost 6 months since I got my Nintendo Wii - it was an anniversary present from my wife. Maybe she was trying to tell me something when I turned up with just a cake for our anniversary. But I really don’t remember much of what happened that day because I was busy picking up my jaw from the floor. I knew my wife was going to get me something but I really didn’t think it was going to be a Nintendo Wii. That was the most romantic night I spent - with my TV and the Nintendo Wii.

I somehow did a good job of keeping my little secret away from my eldest - wasn’t too difficult to keep it away from my second, she was only 3 months old anyway. I can’t remember why I didn’t want to share my Nintendo Wii with my daughter even though I had 2 controllers and enough space in the living area. Anyway I finally decided to break the news to her - that white box lying beside the TV is something useful!

I can remember vividly, it was a rainy Saturday morning. I was nursing a slight headache from the beers I had the previous night. It wasn’t too much of a deal as it got better as the morning progressed. I told her we were going to play bowling and she got ready to wear her shoes. I had to explain to her that we were going to play a video game and turned on the TV. I nervously handed the Wii controller to her and to my relief she held it like a bouquet of flowers. After setting up the game on the Wii, I started explaining the rules of the game to her. She comprehended and we were ready to start.

But for the occasional gutter ball I must say that she was pretty good at it. She did roll herself on the floor once or twice in excitement and I thought it was cute. After a few laughs I “retired” and left her to explore the game while I was reading the newspaper - my eyes were still on her and my Nintendo Wii. Things went better than expected and before long she had mastered the game.

Phew, that was one baptism that I will not forget and I hope she won’t as well. I remember being initiated to video games when I was 10 years old and it was my dad who taught me how to play my first Atari. It was a Pac Man game which was pretty much the craze at that time. How technology has evolved! Now I can convert my cozy living room into a bowling alley, tennis court or even a golf course! My eldest waits patiently for Saturday mornings - to get those strikes and humiliate her Daddy! I can’t imagine what’s going to happen when the 7 month angel grows up…
